Why they choose Marcos: It's about continuity

By Christopher Ryan Maboloc, PhD

The liberals are moving heaven and earth to prevent another Marcos from going back to Malacanang. The people who are doing so can be characterized as intelligent, religious, and morally upright. Their main problem is that if we look into the preferences of the electorate, 6/10 are voting for BBM if elections were held today. The people whom the promise of EDSA failed are voting for continuity more than they are voting for a Marcos.

At the start of the campaign, pundits pointed to the marriage between North and South, which was consummated in the BBM-Sara tandem. This consolidation is a force to reckon with because of the immense popularity of the President who enjoys a high trust rating two months before he vows from office. BBM carries the baggage of his father but why has he maintained his lead by a wide margin?

The answer is that the electorate do not believe that the liberals have the answer to the problems of the country. The perspective of moral reform was used by PNOY in the past but the former president used most of his time going after GMA. He was weak when it came to the needs of the masa and Mindanao, hence the rise of PRRD, whose radical approach to governance was characterized by his political will (e.g. Boracay, Maynilad-Manila Water, PAL use of T2, etc.).

Now, with only a few days left before the elections, the campaign of VP Leni has tried almost everything, but those things have not changed the sentiments of the masses. I wanted to know why. So, I went out and observed. I think that most ordinary people realize that politics will not change their lives. They love PRRD because he is authentic and true to his calling and character as a leader.

The Aquinos had their chance, but they have not changed the lives of the Filipino people. The liberals only have themselves to blame.
